Cléo de 5 à 7

saw this for the first time Wednesday night, fifty years after it was made. on the big screen in the dark. Art Gallery of NSW: Agnès Varda's Cléo de 5 à 7. an old print, not a restoration, was flown from Paris in its metal cannister. grainy 35mm threaded through the projector, scratches & dust, just as it would have been fifty years ago. nothing has been lost, it feels present, not past — bursting with energy, ideas, emotion, no moments of impatience or boredom. starts with a girl pop singer at a Tarot reading, Godard & Karina are in it later, in a movie within the movie, the girl then travels through sunlit Citroën saturated streets of 1962 Paris on the longest day of the year, and it ends in the grounds of a hospital at twilight: fantastic. SYDNEY ppl — it's on again today, Sunday, at 2pm. if you like The Apartments, there is a danger you will love it. it's free.
